Beta-glucan may not be considered an essential nutrient, but it helps lower bad cholesterol levels. Main sources of this nutrient are barley and oats. A study shows that increasing soluble fiber intake (such as beta-glucan) by 5 grams to 10 grams a day decreases LDL cholesterol levels by about 5%.
