Research Notes on Beta Blocker and Statin Combination
Beta-blockers are a class of drugs that are used to treat hypertension and heart failure, while statins are the most frequently prescribed high cholesterol drugs. These two types of drugs are frequently co-prescribed for patients who have pre-existing coronary artery disease and exhibit both hypertension and elevated cholesterol risk factors.1 This approach appears to be beneficial in avoiding a heart attack as the first presenting symptom of severe heart disease.2 Sometimes other drugs, such as ACE inhibitors, calcium channel blockers, diuretics, and angiotensin II receptor blockers, are also added to help control the high blood pressure and/or heart function. A “polypill” has been recently tested and has the potential to be an inexpensive single daily pill that will significantly reduce a person’s risk of heart disease or stroke. This pill contains atenolol (beta blocker) and simvastatin (statin) in addition to ramipril (ACE inhibitor), hydrochlorothiazide (diuretic), and aspirin (antithrombotic).3
Fast Facts:
- Some commonly prescribed beta-blockers and their brand names include: atenolol (Tenormin), metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol), nadolol (Corgard), pindolol (Visken), and timolol (Blocadren).4
- Beta-blockers are usually not prescribed for patients who also have asthma or COPD.5
- Some beta-blockers can adversely affect plasma lipids, particularly triglycerides.
