Research Notes on Beta-Sitosterol Benefits
Beta-sitosterol may have potential benefits in treating high cholesterol and benign prostatic hyperplasia associated with an enlarged prostate.1 Beta-sitosterol is found in common foods and dietary supplements but has not been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.2 Indigestion, flatulence, diarrhea, and constipation are side effects that may occur while taking beta-sitosterol.3

- Beta-sitosterol is the most abundant sterol in the plant kingdom.3
- Currently, no research has been performed on the effectiveness of beta-sitosterol in children.1
- Rice bran, wheat germ, corn oils, soybeans, peanuts, fruits, vegetables, corn chips, and unsweetened chocolate are foods that may contain beta-sitosterol.4
- Beta-sitosterol is an ingredient in some margarine and yogurt and these products may provide 1.5 to 3.0 grams of daily intake.5
- Other purported uses for beta-sitosterol that have not been evaluated or tested include treating gallstones, enhancing sexual performance, boosting immune system, treating common cold and flu, asthma treatment, relieving menopause symptoms, and helping with hair loss.1
