Beta-carotene belongs to a family of natural chemicals known as carotenoids. Beta-carotene is converted to vitamin A by the body. Consuming foods rich in beta-carotene appears to protect the body from damaging molecules called free radicals. Some studies indicate that increasing the amount of beta-carotene may aid in the aging process.
