Research Notes on Best Cold Medicines
Because not everyone suffers from the same symptoms of a cold, the trick to finding the best cold medicine is to find one that works to alleviate the symptoms that you suffer from.1 A runny nose or postnasal drip will typically respond to antihistamines, while nasal congestion and sinus pressure respond best to a decongestant.1 A cough suppressant may be in order if the coughing keeps you awake at night.1 An expectorant may be necessary if you feel throat or chest congestion and need help to expel mucus or phlegm.1
Fast Facts:
- Acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and naproxen are recommended as the best medicines for general aches and pains associated with a cold.2
- Medications containing pseudoephedrine are recommended for congestion.2
- Look for guaifenesin as an active ingrediant in expectorants, while dextromethorphan containing antitussives are helpful for dry coughs.2
