Research Notes on Best Children's Cold Medicines
In recent years, the use of cold medicines for children has been greatly debated. Recently the FDA recommended that children under the age of 4 not receive cough and cold remedies due to the lack of evidence that the medicines actually work for young children.1 In fact, there were 7,000 reported cases of children becoming sick from using the medicines, primarily overdoses. Parents are having trouble figuring out which cold medicines to give their children due to these warnings. The best way to find the right cold medication for your child, is to research what is recommended and what is not, and speak with your doctor.
Fast Facts:
- Some decongestants can cause children to become hyperactive or irritable.2
- Acetaminophen and ibuprofen can be given to reduce fever at the discretion of the child's physician.3
- Medications that are labeled "cough and cold" are usually the most helpful for older children.2
