Research Notes on Benzodiazepines and Pregnancy
Benzodiazepine use during pregnancy is not recommended. The FDA has listed this as a category D medication. Neurodevelopmental disorders occur in the babies exposed to benzodiazepines. Functional defects and lower intelligence may occur.1

- When taken shortly before labor or delivery benzodiazepines can cause problems in the newborn such as weakness, breathing problems, and slow heartbeat.2
- Benzodiazepines are a medication used in the treatment of anxiety, insomnia, seizures, and alcohol withdrawal.1
- Side effects may include weakness, amnesia, depression, blurred vision, and upset stomach.1
