Research Notes on Benzocaine
Benzocaine a local anesthetic which is found in many over the counter ointments. It is used as a numbing agent to treat mouth ulcers and toothaches.1 Benzocaine works by numbing the nerve endings close to the surface of the skin.2
Fast Facts:
- Marketed under the trade names Hurricaine, Topex, Cepacol, and Cetacaine.3
- Also used in certain brands of condoms.
- Some common side effects may include dizziness, headache, breathing problems, or redness.4
