Research Notes on Benign Heart Murmur
Heart murmurs are unusual heart sounds that can be detected with a stethoscope. Most murmurs are completely harmless and do not mean you have a disease or disorder.1 Heart murmurs are common and usually benign in children, though in adults a murmur can indicate a heart valve problem.2 If you have a benign heart murmur, most likely you will not have any signs or symptoms.
Fast Facts:
- A heart murmur is not a disease.
- About 30% of children have an innocent heart murmur at some point.3
- Diagnostic testing may be done through chest x-ray, electrocardiogram, and echocardiogram.4
