Research Notes on Benefits of Smoking Cessation
People who stop smoking increase their chances of living longer, healthier lives than those who continue to smoke. Short term benefits of quitting include a decreased chance of a heart attack, improvement of the ability to taste and smell, and improved lung function. Long term benefits include lower risk of developing cancer of the lungs, throat, bladder, kidney and pancreas.1
Fast Facts:
- Within 20 minutes of quitting both blood pressure and heart rate drop.2
- Carbon monoxide levels in the blood return to normal after 12 hours of not smoking.2
- After 5 to 15 years of not smoking, the risk of stroke in a former smoker is the same as that of someone who has never smoked.2
