Research Notes on Behavior Therapy for Anxiety Disorders
Behavior therapy is a type of psychotherapy that has proven very beneficial to those suffering from various types of anxiety disorders.1 Most often, behavior therapy is combined with cognitive therapy, teaching you to change both your thinking patterns which provoke anxiety, as well as the ways in which you react when faced with anxious feelings.2 The backbone of behavioral therapy in treating anxiety disorders is to have patients face the things they fear and to learn to stop avoiding things which may trigger panic attacks.1 Although small gains are usually made immediately, the true benefits of behavioral therapy are often not seen for several months, and if no progress has been made within six months of treatment, it is unlikely to occur with further sessions.1 Side effects of behavior therapy for anxiety disorders is rare, and is mostly limited to vivid dreams and a temporary increase in anxious feelings during the first few sessions.1

- In order to be effective, you must discuss your exact fears and phobias with your therapist so that treatment methods are tailored to your situation.2
- Relaxation techniques can be used in addition to behavioral therapy to cope with the stress of facing your fears.3
- It is important that you feel comfortable with your therapist, as you must trust them in order to feel comfortable enough to continue therapy even though you may be anxious. If you feel uncomfortable, seek a different provider.3
