Research Notes on Behavioral Therapy
Behavioral therapy is a psychological approach that can be used to help an individual replace an undesirable behavior with a more appropriate one.1 It focuses on the individual participating in behavior that is positive or socially reinforcing. This type of therapy helps a person understand that changed behavior can help change how they feel.2
Fast Facts:
- Behavioral therapy may be useful in the treatment of aggressive behavior, substance abuse, problems with anger, eating disorders, phobias, anxiety disorders, incontinence, and insomnia.1
- Other interventions such as medication may be used along with behavior therapy.1
- The start of modern behavior therapy began in the 1950s with B.F. Skinner and Joseph Wolpe; gaining widespread use by the 1970s.1
