Research Notes on Bed Wetting and Genetics
Involuntary bedwetting, medically referred to as enuresis or primary nocturnal enuresis, is common in many children over age six and research indicates that it can be related to genetics.1 2 There is greater chance of bedwetting occurring in a child when either one or both parents wet the bed, compared with children of parents that did not. Sharing the experience of your bedwetting with your child, coupled with support and patience, may help your child to cope with his/her bedwetting.3
Fast Facts:
- Children who have just one parent who wet the bed as a child have a 44% chance of wetting the bed; 77% if both parents wet the bed.4
- Although related to genetics, bedwetting has no known cure.
- Many children outgrow bedwetting on their own, while others may benefit from some form of treatment.5
- If you think your child may have a medical condition, or if you have other concerns about your child's bedwetting, consultation with a qualified medical professional is recommended.
