Research Notes on Bed Wetting and Bladder Training
If your child has trouble with bedwetting, medically referred to as enuresis or primary nocturnal enuresis, bladder training is a treatment method that may help. Typically most effective for children with small bladders, bladder training can "stretch" the bladder and increase the amount of urine that can be held for your child's expected age range.1 2 The goal of bladder training is to help your child to learn to delay urination during the day, at least up to 45 minutes.3
Fast Facts:
- Bladder training may help your child to reduce the frequency of nighttime wetting over time.1
- To implement bladder training, follow these steps: 1) Increase liquids consumed during the day, 2) Help your child practice delaying urination as long as possible, 3) Record how long your child can wait before going to the bathroom.3
- Each day your child should be able to increase the amount of time he/she can delay going to the bathroom; at least two to three minutes.3
- May be most beneficial for an older child.3
- Consultation with your child's medical professional is recommended before beginning any new therapy or treatment.
