Research Notes on Bay
Bay, also called bay leaf, is a species of the Laurel family and share many of the same characteristics.1 In the Middle Ages, abortions were thought to be induced by the consumption of bay berries.2 The oil of the bay leaf is sometimes used when making perfume.3 For health purposes, the oil is extracted from the bay plant - the leaves and berries are rarely used.3
Fast Facts:
- Bay oil is sometimes used to relieve earaches, and applied topically to quicken the healing of bruises.3
- Bay is also used to treat arthritis pain, muscle sprains, and varicose veins.4
- The oil from the bay berries are sometimes used in soapmaking.4
