Barium x-rays are used to diagnose abnormalities of the gastrointestinal tract, such as tumors and polyps. The patient ingests barium sulfate, which x-rays cannot pass through. Reasons for undergoing this procedure include abdominal pain, bleeding from the rectum or in vomit, chronic diarrhea or constipation, pain or difficulty swallowing, or unexplained weight loss.
