Barium Meal

Research Notes on Barium Meal

A barium meal is a thick, white, milkshake-like liquid, that the radiologist has you drink before an upper gastrointestinal series is preformed. This helps the radiologist see inside your digestive system using a machine called a fluoroscope. This helps him see if there are any abnormalities in your digestive system like ulcers, scar tissue, abnormal growths, hernias and whether the muscles that control swallowing are working properly.
