Bariatric surgery is the term for various types of weight loss surgical procedures. They are performed to treat obesity by modifying the gastrointestinal tract, thereby reducing nutrient intake and/or absorption. This does not include surgical procedures such as liposuction or abdominoplasty which are procedures that surgically remove body fat.
