Research Notes on Balm of Gilead
Balm of Gilead, derived from the resinous juices of the balsam poplar tree, is a substance used in perfumes.1 The herb's name comes from the ancient region of Gilead in Palestine which is known for its balm's great healing powers.1 In addition to its cosmetic use, Balm of Gilead is used to soothe mucous membrane ailments such as coughs, respiratory infections, laryngitis and sore throats.1
Fast Facts:
- Also referred to as poplar buds and balsam poplar.2
- When combined with coltsfoot, red sage and white horehound, its actions on the respiratory system are enhanced.2
- Can be used externally to ease the inflammation of rheumatism and arthritis, as well as treating psoriasis and dry eczema.2
