Research Notes on Bael
Bael, known as Aegle marmelos in Latin, It is a fruit bearing tree that lives in dry forests on hills and in plains exclusively in Asia. The bael tree has thorns and fragrant flowers, but the skin of the fruit is so hard it takes a hammer to crack it open.1 The tree was known to be in existence during the Vedic period, 2000 - 800 BCE. The leaves are sacred to the Lord Shiva, the God of health. It is used in ayurvedic medicine2
Fast Facts:
- The pulp when dressed with palm sugar is often eaten for breakfast in Indonesia, however, the leaves are said to cause abortion and sterility in women.3
