The phylum Bacteroidetes is composed of three large groups of bacteria with the best-known category being Bacteroidaceae. This family of gram-negative bacteria is found primarily in the intestinal tracts and mucous membranes of warm-blooded animals and is sometimes considered pathogenic.1 The phylum Bacteroidetes is composed of three large classes of bacteria that are widely distributed in the environment, including in soil, in sediments and sea water.2
Fast Facts:
- Three classes of Bacteroidetes: Bacteroides, Flavobacteria, and Sphingobacteria.3
- Obese individuals had a higher ratio of Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes bugs than lean people.4
- Fecal Bacteroidetes are considered an interesting alternative to more traditional indicator organisms such as E. coli and Enterococci.1
