Research Notes on Bacterial Vaginosis
Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is the most common cause of vaginal infection (vaginitis). 1 It is not generally considered to be a sexually transmitted disease.1 The cause of BV is not full understood. BV is associated with an imbalance in the bacteria that are normally found in a woman's vagina.2 The symptoms of bacterial vaginosis are vaginal discharge and odor. 3
Fast Facts:
- To reduce the risk of bacterial vaginosis or recurrent BV, it is advised not to douche. Douching upsets the normal PH balance of the vagina. 4
- BV is treated with antibiotics.
- There is significant evidence that BV during pregnancy is linked to preterm labor.5
