Research Notes on Bacterial Meningitis Treatment
Bacterial meningitis requires prompt treatment. It is an infection of the spinal fluid and the fluid that surrounds the brain. Treatment may start with a broad spectrum antibiotic while the doctor confirms the source of infection. The type or combination of antibiotics used will depend on the type of bacteria.1
Fast Facts:
- A spinal tap may be needed to confirm the type of bacteria.2
- If caused from a severe infection of the sinuses or mastoids, drainage of these areas may be neccessary.1
- Left untreated, bacterial meningitis has a high death rate.2
