Bacterial gastroenteritis is an inflammation of the stomach and intestines caused by bacteria in the digestive tract. Many different types of bacteria can produce the symptoms associated with bacterial gastroenteritis, including salmonella, shigella, staphylococcus, campylobacter jejuni, clostridium and E. coli. Gastroenteritis is a self-limiting illness which will resolve by itself. It is important to stay hydrated and nourished during a bout of gastroenteritis.
