Research Notes on Bacterial Conjunctivitis
Conjunctivitis (commonly called "Pink Eye" or "Red Eye" in North America) is an inflammation of the conjunctiva (the outermost layer of the eye and the inner surface of the eyelids), most commonly due to an allergic reaction or an infection (usually viral, but sometimes bacterial). Conjunctivitis has many different possible causes. The viral and bacterial forms of conjunctivitis are contagious, and can therefore be caused by coming in contact with another individual who is already infected. ...read more from Wikipedia.

- The most common types of bacteria that cause bacterial conjunctivitis include Staphylococcus aureus, Haemophilus influenzae, Streptococcus pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.1
- Neisseria gonorrhoeae is another possible cause of bacterial conjunctivitis in patients at a sexually active age.2
- The mainstay of medical treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis is topical antibiotic therapy.2
- Systemic antibiotics are indicated for N. gonorrhoeae infections.2
