Research Notes on Back Pain and Weight
Excess weight is one of the leading causes of back pain.1 With approximately 64.5% of all Americans being obese, doctors have seen more people complain of back problems.2 Excess weight adds strain to the muscles and ligaments in the back, which can lead to damage.1 If you are obese, there is a good chance that you will have reoccurrences of low back pain throughout your life.2
Fast Facts:
- If you are overweight, losing weight can have a significant impact on your back pain.2
- Low back pain from a herniated disk is usually the result of your spine having to compensate for the pressure of weight on the back.1
- Being overweight also puts you at risk of developing osteoarthritis. One of the main complaints of those with osteoarthritis is back pain.2
