Research Notes on Back Pain After Sneezing
People may experience back pain after sneezing, when they have nerve-root pressure. Sneezing causes core muscles to contract, putting pressure on your spine.1 A herniated disc can also be the culprit of your back pain after sneezing.2 You may often feel back pain from a previous injury when you sneeze. It has also been shown that back injuries are a common side effect of sneezing and coughing.3
Fast Facts:
- Herniated discs are also referred to as: protruding, buldging, slipped, ruptured, prolapsed, and degenerated.2
- In 2004 baseball player Sammy Sosa sneezed twice, causing a sprained ligament in his lower back.3
- Sneezes can be so forceful, they can herniate a weakened spinal disc.3
- Sciatica can be aggravated by sneezing.4
