BRCA1 and BRCA2 are genes that are in a class known as tumor suppressors. Variations -- called single nucleotide polymorphism (SNPs) -- in these two genes can lead to an increased risk of breast cancer and other cancers. Women with a family history of breast cancer now have the option of being tested for these SNPs.
