Research Notes on BRCA1
BRCA1 (breast cancer 1, early onset) is a gene in a class known as tumor suppressors. Variations in this gene have been found to correlate with an increased risk of breast cancer and other cancers, particularly ovarian cancer.
Fast Facts:
- Women with a family history of breast cancer have the option of having a BRCA Test that checks for variations in the genetic structure that can predispose them to breast cancer.
- BRCA1 and BRCA2 were the first breast cancer genes to be identified.
- Breast cancer genes can be passed from either mother or father.
