Research Notes on BCG


BCG is a vaccine used to prevent tuberculosis. Also known as the Bacillus Calmette-Guérin vaccine, it can be used in bladder cancer treatment as well. The vaccine contains a weak strain of bacteria that does not cause disease. In preventing tuberculosis, it works by stimulating the immune system in order to fight against stronger strains in the future. It is unclear how the BCG vaccine works to fight bladder cancer.1

  • BCG is named after the veterinarian Albert Camette and his assistant Camille Guérin who originally developed the bacteria strain for vaccine.2
  • Some believe BCG helps treat bladder cancer by stimulating the immune system to destroy cancer cells in the bladder wall.3
  • BCG has been effective in treating Stage 0 and Stage 1 bladder cancer.3
  • BCG is used more often to prevent the recurrence of bladder cancer than in actual treatment.3
