Research Notes on Avulsion Fracture

Avulsion Fracture, also known as Sprain Fracture or Strain Fracture, is a type of fracture which is caused when a ligament or tendon pulls away a fragment of the bone. Direct (i.e. sports related) or indirect (i.e. rolling an ankle) force are the main causes. This type of fracture only requires surgery if the separation of the bone fragment is a large detachment or for an injured growth plate.

Fast Facts:

  • Avulsion Fractures located in the ankle are often undetected in the first radiography
  • Ligament injuries occur more frequently in adults than children
  • Tendons in children and adolescents are stronger than bone; where adults have stronger bones than tendons
