Research Notes on Avoiding Ear Pain While Flying
For many, the most challenging part of travel is avoiding ear pain while flying. If you have a cold or another infection, one of the simplest steps you can take to avoid ear pain is to not fly at all.1 Flying can exacerbate ear pain, and can lead to damage to your eardrum.1 Adults who experience ear pain while flying, can try taking a decongestant before flying.2 This has shown some degree in success in reducing ear pain for adult travelers.2
Fast Facts:
- If your child experiences ear pain each time they fly, giving them acetaminophen half an hour before landing may ward off ear pain.3
- Yawning frequently has helped both adults and children avoid ear pain while flying.3
- Having your child sip or eat as the plane descends may reduce ear pain.3
