Research Notes on Bird Flu
Bird flu is not one disease, but actually several strains of flu that have adapted themselves to a specific host - in this case, birds. Only a few of these strains are dangerous to humans. Some scientists believe one strain, H5N1, has the potential to mutate and cause a pandemic in humans.
Fast Facts:
- Bird flu is a strain of influenza, particularly influenza A, a natural presence in birds.
- Bird flu is considered the most likely virus to cause the next major flu pandemic.
- Bird flu is contagious among birds.
- A few strains have infected humans, crossing the species barrier.
