Research Notes on Autopsy
An autopsy is a medical examination performed post-mortem by a pathologist.1 The test is done to determine the cause or manner of death of an individual.1 Generally performed when unexpected or unexplained death occurs, an autopsy can also diagnose genetic diseases.2 Sometimes autopsies are not an accepted procedure in some cultures, religions and ethnic groups.2

- Forensic autopsy performed when criminal mischief is suspected.1
- Permission from a living relative may be required.1
- Approximately 8.4 - 24.4% will detect major diagnostic errors.1
- Currently only performed in approximately 6% of non-forensic hospital deaths; less in natural deaths occurring in the community.3
