Research Notes on Autologous Stem Cell Transplants
An autologous stem cell transplant is a process in which healthy stem cells taken from a patient's body before treatment are transplanted back into their body after treatment.1 Patients who suffer from various types of leukemia and lymphoma are good candidates for autologous stem cell transplantation, as are some people with testicular cancer, breast cancer, multiple myeloma and amyloidosis.2 The best candidates for this procedure are those under the age of 70, have normal kidney and liver functions, and have no history of diabetes or heart disease.1
Fast Facts:
- Stem cells can be collected from bone marrow or blood.1
- Chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy are typically administered before the transplant so that the diseased cells in the blood are destroyed before the healthy cells are replaced.1
- Autologous transplants typically cause fewer problems than allogenic transplants, but antibiotics are given to reduce the possibility of infection.1
- Complications include nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, hair loss, depression, cataracts, a recurrence of cancer and the possibility of other types of cancer developing later in life.1
- Not all hospitals can perform stem cell transplants.1
