Research Notes on Autoimmune Disease Treatments
An autoimmune disorder is a malfunction of the body's immune system that causes the body to attack its own tissues.1 The goals of treatment are to reduce symptoms and control the autoimmune process while maintaining the body's ability to fight disease. Treatments vary widely and depend on the specific disease and your symptoms. However, if the the autoimmune disorder affects the blood, the person may need blood transfusions.2
Fast Facts:
- Treatment includes hormone replacement therapy, enzyme replacement therapy, corticosteroids and NSAIDs.3
- Treatment options have one of three goals: a) relieving symptoms b) preserving organ function and c) targeting disease mechanisms.4
- Some examples of autoimmune disorders are: systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis and Goodpasture's syndrome.5
