Research Notes on Autism Causes
Although the exact cause of autism is unknown, researchers know that autism is the result of an abnormality in the brain's structure or function.1 There is strong evidence that shows a link between genetics and autism, but that does not explain the exact cause.2 Some researchers believe that environmental factors such as air pollutants and viral infections play a role in triggering autism.2 The cause of autism has been greatly debated in the medical community.
Fast Facts:
- Some parents of autistic children feel that there is a link between vaccinations and autism.3
- There has been research done on the possibility that autistic children may have suffered some kind of trauma during childbirth.3
- Other theories suggest that pesticides, prenatal stress, and ultrasounds may play a role in autism.3
