Research Notes on Auditory Processing Disorder

Auditory processing disorder (APD) is a learning disability which affects how the brain interprets auditory information. Individuals with APD have normal hearing, but experience difficulty processing auditory information into language and usually require additional time to process information. Symptoms may include difficulty with attention span and following oral directions, poor listening skills and speech difficulties or delays.

Fast Facts:

  • APD is a complex problem affecting about 5% of school-aged children.
  • Kids with APD often do not recognize subtle differences between sounds in words.
  • The many possible causes of APD include head trauma, lead poisoning, and chronic ear infections.
  • A teacher is usually the first one to notice auditory processing difficulty in your child, so talking to the teacher is a good idea.
  • There is no specific treatment available at this time, but there are programs available that can help.
  • Much research is still needed to understand APD problems.
