Research Notes on ADHD

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurobehavioral disorder that can result in significant functional impairment.1 ADHD is characterized by pervasive inattention and/or hyperactivity and impulsivity.1 ADHD becomes apparent in some children in the preschool and early school years.2 In order to achieve his or her full potential, a child with ADHD should receive help, guidance, and understanding from parents and the public education system.2

Fast Facts:

  • It is estimated that between three and five percent of children have ADHD, which is approximately two million children in the United States.3
  • ADHD is often treated with stimulant drugs such as Ritalin, Adderall, Concerta, Dexedrine, and Dextrostat.4
  • Studies have shown that between 30 and 70 percent of children with ADHD continue to exhibit symptoms in the adult years.5
