Research Notes on Attention Deficit Disorder and Drug Use

Researchers believe that drug use during pregnancy may increase the risk of children having ADHD. This includes illegal drug use, alcohol, and tobacco.1 It is believed that the use of these drugs reduces the activity of nerve cells that produce neurotransmitters.1 Not only does drug use affect babies in utero, but it is also affecting them later in life as teenagers. Self medication has been on the rise for teens with ADD/ADHD, which makes them more vulnerable to illegal drug use.2

Fast Facts:

  • ADHD may be related to earlier onset of substance abuse with a longer period of abuse and slower recovery time.2
  • Parents should discuss drug abuse with their children starting at an early age especially if these children have been diagnosed with ADHD.2
  • Exposure to lead at an early age or in utero may also be a cause of ADHD.1
