Research Notes on Attention Deficit Disorder Types
The three official types of attention deficit disorder (ADD) (medically referred to as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or ADHD) are predominantly inattentive ADHD, predominantly hyperactive-impulsive ADHD, and combined inattentive-hyperactive ADHD.1 People with predominantly inattentive ADHD have symptoms of inattentiveness but not hyperactivity or impulsivity. People with predominantly hyperactive-impulsive ADHD show symptoms of hyperactivity and impulsivity but not inattentiveness. Finally, people with combined inattentive-hyperactive ADHD have symptoms of inattentiveness, hyperactivity, and impulsivity.2

- Using brain scans, Dr. Daniel Amen has defined six types of ADD: classic ADD, inattentive ADD, over-focused ADD, temporal lobe ADD, limbic system ADD, and ring of fire ADD.3
- ADHD is one of the most well-known behavior disorders of childhood.4
- Boys are more likely to have ADHD than girls.5
- Adults are often not diagnosed or treated for ADHD.4
