Research Notes on Attention Deficit Disorder Statistics

Attention deficit disorder (ADD) (medically referred to as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or ADHD) affects about three to five percent of people under age nineteen worldwide. There appears to be a higher rate of children with ADD in North America, and statistics also show that ADD is more prevalent on the east coast of the USA than it is on the west coast.1 Children with fair to poor health are three times more likely to have attention deficit disorder than children with good health.2

Fast Facts:

  • Attention deficit disorder is one of the most well-known disabilities during childhood.3
  • Boys are more likely to have attention deficit disorder than girls.4
  • Adults are often not diagnosed or treated for attention deficit disorder.3
