Research Notes on Attention Deficit Disorder Genetics
Recent studies have proven to show that attention deficit disorder also known as ADD is mostly genetic; meaning it runs within families.1 When a child is diagnosed with ADD, it is very likely that it will also be found in other blood relatives. For instance, it has been shown that one-third of all men who had ADD as children will have biological children with ADD.2 Studies indicate that ADD is highly heritable and genetics factor in about 75% of cases3
Fast Facts:
- The exact cause of ADD is still a mystery.
- ADD always begins in childhood, although in some cases it may not be diagnosed until adulthood.4
- Genetics is only one of the possible causes of ADD; other factors may include diet and social or physical environment.
