Research Notes on Atrovent and Pregnancy
Atrovent is considered to be relatively safe for use during pregnancy. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has listed Atrovent as a category B drug during pregnancy. Drugs in this classification have not been well studied in pregnant women, but animal studies have revealed no increased potential for birth defects in the fetus when the drug is administered during pregnancy.1
Fast Facts:
- When studied in animals, high levels of the active ingredient in Atrovent did increase the risk of miscarriage; however, normal human dosages of Atrovent did not cause problems.2
- Though considered relatively safe, the benefits of Atrovent to the mother should be clearly weighed against any possible risk to the fetus before continuing use throughout a pregnancy.2
- Atrovent is a brand name of the generic medication ipratropium that is sometimes recommended in the treatment of allergies, sinusitis, and COPD.2
