Research Notes on Atrial Septal Defect Treatment
The treatment of atrial septal defect (ASD) depends on many factors. A small ASD with no symptoms may only require frequent monitoring. In some cases open heart surgery is necessary in order to close the defect. There is also a nonsurgical method that is being used to close atrial septal defects. It involves placing a patch on the defect by a procedure called cardiac catheterization.1
Fast Facts:
- If an ASD hasn't closed on it's own by age three, it probably never will.2
- After surgery to close an ASD, the size of the heart usually returns to normal within six months.2
- Cardiac catheterization has a success rate of 99%.3
