Research Notes on Ativan and Pregnancy
Ativan is a drug used to treat anxiety and bipolar disorder. It can cause serious complications in pregnant women. The use of Ativan in the first trimester of pregnancy has been associated with fetal damage.1 It is recommended that women avoid taking Ativan during the first trimester and throughout the remainder of the pregnancy if at all possible.1
Fast Facts:
- Ativan has been classified by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration as a medicine that can pose serious risk to an unborn child.2
- If you are thinking of becoming pregnant, consult with your physician regarding the use of Ativan prior to and during pregnancy.
- Ativan may be prescribed by your physician if the benefits of the drug far outweigh the possible risks to the fetus.2
- If you are using Ativan for bipolar disorder, see what psychiatrists say about the use of alternative treatments for this condition.
