Atherosclerosis is the buildup of plaque in the arteries over time. The exact cause is not known. It is believed that certain risk factors increase the chances of developing atherosclerosis. Some things like family history of the disease cannot be controlled. Other factors are controllable such as smoking, maintaining a healthy weight, eating a healthy diet, and controlling diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol levels.1

  • More common with age.1
  • Stress, sleep apnea and consuming alcohol may also increase the risk of developing atherosclerosis.2
  • May start in childhood.1
