Research Notes on Atherosclerosis Prevention
Atherosclerosis is the buildup of plaque inside the arteries, which may progress to coronary heart disease, peripheral vascular disease, and cerebrovascular disease. Several major risk factors greatly increase the chance of developing atherosclerosis, such as having high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity and smoking. Living a healthy lifestyle that includes regular exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, and eating a healthy diet may help reduce the chances of developing atherosclerosis.1
Fast Facts:
- Talk to your doctor if any members of your family have a history of heart disease, stroke, or other vascular problems.1
- A heart-healthy diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables may help reduce the likelihood of developing atherosclerosis.2
- If you smoke, quitting is the best way to reduce your chances of having complications, such as a heart attack or stroke.2
- Due to improved treatment and better lifestyles, the rate of death related to atherosclerosis has dropped by 25% from 30 years ago.1
