Astrocytoma tumors represent the most common type of glioma. They are formed from astrocytes, cells which make up the supportive tissue of the brain. They are often graded, ranging from a Grade I (least malignant) to Grade IV (most malignant).

Fast Facts:

  • In children, most astrocytomas are considered low-grade, however in adults most are high-grade.
  • They occur in many areas of the brain, including the brain stem.
  • Usually lower grade tumors astrocytomas grow slowly, and are normally localized to one part of the brain. Higher-grade astrocytomas may invade the surrounding tissue, and grow quickly, thus requiring more aggressive treatment.
