Research Notes on Asthma and Dyspnea
Dyspnea, also known as shortness of breath or SOB, is a common and primary symptom of the chronic inflammatory disease of the airways known as asthma.1 In most patients with asthma, symptoms are well controlled by anti-inflammatory therapy, however in a small percentage of the population shortness of breath still causes severe exacerbations of asthma.2
Fast Facts:
- Shortness of breath is the most common reason why patients seek treatment.3
- Patients with chronic pulmonary diseases are often limited in their activities due to respiratory discomfort.
- An inability to recognize shortness of breath symptoms may increase a person's risk of developing more severe asthma.2
- Poor perception of SOB symptoms often results in patients underestimating the degree of intensity of their asthma attack.4
